Packeteer News:
PACKETEER LAUNCHES NEW WEB-BASED HOST ANALYSIS REPORTING
FOR RAPID TROUBLESHOOTING AND CONTAINMENT OF NETWORK
ATTACKS
New Analysis Tool Leverages Packeteer’s Extensible User Interface Architecture
to Quickly Diagnose Network Vulnerabilities
Cupertino, CA – August 9, 2005 – Packeteer® (NASDAQ: PKTR), the global leader
in WAN Application Optimization, today announced the release of its new Host Analysis
Plug-in, an advanced troubleshooting and reporting tool that rapidly detects network
anomalies by analyzing host and traffic flow activity. Because network and application
performance is critical to business productivity, any attack on availability and
responsiveness negatively impacts employee productivity, customer service and IT
resources. To stay competitive, enterprises must be able to immediately address the
question “What is happening on the network?” and then protect business-critical
applications from unsanctioned traffic, viruses, and worms.
"Packeteer's Host Analysis Plug-in provides new and critically important levels of control
over our network that were previously unavailable," says Peter Barton, network manager
with IESI Corporation, one of the leading non-hazardous solid waste management
companies in the United States. "We're now equipped to quickly identify abusive users
and malicious software, isolated down to the individual machine level. As a result, we
can rapidly contain the spread of viruses and isolate users running bandwidth-killing file
sharing software like Limewire, Kazaa and Morpheous. This new plug-in is now a vital
part of our arsenal to optimize WAN performance and capacity."
Product Details
The new Host Analysis Plug-in, available as a simple software plug-in for
PacketShaper® WAN appliances, is the first and only troubleshooting tool in the industry
to provide application-level diagnostic information on a WAN optimization appliance.
Leveraging a highly flexible and simple-to-navigate web interface for real-time visibility,
the new tool provides aggregated host reporting that drills down to the flow level to
provide application-layer visibility. As a result, enterprises can proactively control hosts
exhibiting anomalous behavior such as an unusual number of connection attempts or
irregular and excessive bandwidth consumption so business productivity is preserved and
recurring costs are contained.
"As a long-time Packeteer VAR, we've helped numerous customers take advantage of the
advanced visibility tools provided by PacketShapers," said Henry Draughon, Manager,
Business Development with Florance & Associates Consulting. "With the introduction
of the Host Analysis Plug-in, Packeteer is addressing pent-up demand for the ability to
isolate and control rogue users, bandwidth-abusing applications and misbehaving host
systems from eating up valuable network bandwidth."
The Host Analysis Plug-in is yet another enhancement to Packeteer’s industry leading
Layer 7 visibility capabilities that provide identification and classification of applications,
real-time monitoring of bandwidth utilization, application response time performance,
SLA monitoring and advanced troubleshooting diagnostics. Host Analysis Plug-in
reports provide an additional level of detail that, together with Packeteer’s robust
reporting on network efficiency and utilization, response time monitoring, top talkers and
top listeners, provides comprehensive metrics to ensure WAN optimization. Enterprises
considering the purchase of dedicated monitoring devices will want to evaluate the
additional value that can be derived from deploying the monitoring, bandwidth
management and acceleration capabilities in a single PacketShaper WAN appliance.
“Once again, Packeteer raises the technical bar for gaining critical visibility into vital
performance areas that directly impact WAN performance,” said Packeteer’s Puglia.“While other vendors pay lip-service to providing WAN visibility, we continue to equip
our enterprise customers with the industry’s most powerful network diagnostic and
visibility tools, along with best-in-class control and acceleration capabilities that are
essential for optimizing WAN performance.”
Availability
Packeteer’s extensible user interface is designed for investment protection through quick
and easy feature additions with software plug-ins, allowing customers to expand the
features and capabilities of their existing WAN appliances as Packeteer develops new
technology and tools.
The Host Analysis Plug-in is free-of-charge to existing customers with active service
contracts and is immediately downloadable from www.packeteer.com/support.

PACKETEER® INTRODUCES NEW PACKETSHAPER PLUG-IN TO IDENTIFY
AND CURB RECREATIONAL GAMING TRAFFIC
Customers provided key tool to achieve performance balance between business-critical and
recreational traffic
CUPERTINO, Calif. — July 11, 2005 – Packeteer® (NASDAQ: PKTR), the global
leader in WAN Application Optimization, today introduced a new gaming detection plug-in
for its PacketShaper product family that enables customers to identify and control or
prevent recreational traffic on their wide area network. Immediately downloadable from
the Packeteer web site, the new plug-in detects the most popular Internet gaming
applications currently being downloaded and controls bandwidth allocated to traffic
designated as “recreational”.
“Recreational Internet gaming consumes a considerable amount of WAN bandwidth that
can negatively impact the performance of business critical applications and stymie
employee productivity,” said David Puglia, vice president of marketing with Packeteer.“With the introduction of our new gaming detection plug-in, we’re providing our customers
with a significant tool that will help them preserve bandwidth and prioritize their most vital
applications and network traffic.”
The new plug-in is designed to detect all of Microsoft’s Xbox games that use Xbox Live
for networked gaming, such as Halo 2; Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft; Sierra
Entertainment’s Half-Life 2, including Steam content distribution; and Epic Games’ Unreal
Tournament 2004.
“Games are one of the most common applications running on our network, and being able
to have the visibility into, and control of, our traffic allows us to strike a balance between
the recreational and non-recreational traffic on our WAN,” said Todd Chapman, Network
Operations Programmer of UC Davis. “Packeteer allows us to guarantee application
performance to, ensure that the 5000-plus students paying the University for Internet access
receive sufficient bandwidth to accommodate the popularity of Internet gaming.”
The new gaming detection plug-in is an additive feature to Packeteer's WAN Application
Optimization appliances that define and deploy specific policy management strategies for
each class of application traffic running in an enterprise. These strategies provide granular
bandwidth prioritization services to ensure optimal application performance.
“Our system architecture coupled with our team of engineers dedicated to application
identification helps ensure that our customers have control over all business-critical and
recreational application traffic and can guarantee optimal performance,” said David Puglia,
vice president of marketing for Packeteer. “Striking the right balance for an organization’s
users and applications is critical and our new plug-in does this quickly and efficiently.”
The new plug-in is available immediately. Packeteer customers with existing service
contracts can download them at: http://www.packeteer.com/support/
